An FSA or forward sortation area is a geographical region where all Canadian postal codes start with the same three characters. NAVTEQ FSA Boundaries displays the FSA area as a polygon.

NAVTEQ FSA Boundaries details:

NAVTEQ FSA Boundaries data, similar to US ZIP Codes, are polygons representing FSA postal delivery areas. An FSA code is the first three characters of the Canadian postal code (e.g. "J8Y" of J8Y 3V8). The first letter of an FSA code denotes a particular "postal district", which corresponds to an entire province or territory (excluding Quebec and Ontario). The digit specifies if the FSA is urban or rural. A zero indicates a wide-area rural region, while all other digits indicate urban areas. The second letter represents a specific rural region, an entire medium-sized city, or section of a major metropolitan area.

NOTE: The last three characters of the Canadian postal are know as LDU's or local delivery units. Similar to a US ZIP+4's, LDU's represent a single address or a range of addresses, and are represented spatially as points. LDU's are NOT included with the FSA file.
